Weikai YU Architecture Wearable

My name is Keven.i come from shanghai, china. My major at the undergraduate level is Landscape Architecture. The core of the major is to consider how the environment including nature and space interacts with people.

I was inspired by the multi-layered lattice structure of the Louvre in Abu Dhabi designed by Jean Nouvel, which covers the entire interior of the building and the complex geometry is a reflection of the architectural mechanism. As I believe that their design styles and use of geometry and composition are similar, I have combined them in a way that better reflects the structure, space, colour and light.

While working on the model I came across a case I really liked, Gordon Matta-Clark’s splitting project in New York, USA, which I particularly liked, and in order to better understand the changes before and after the spitting, I combined it with the references I had found for this work and roughly recreated them in the computer. Then the cutting was done.

For the scale, because it is difficult to find the exact dimensions, but based on the size and position of the doors and windows in the photos, I think it should be a not too spacious space. Slightly compact. The “splitting” broke this tension, the space became loose and then I tried to cut my model in the computer. I was able to notice the changes more clearly, and the different lighting in the software made the cut-out space even more fantastic. I always felt that there was something missing in the computer model compared to the photographies. I think it’s the “dilapidation” of the houses, because the feeling of being old and dilapidated is full of memories. And memories are another important factor in giving people a sense of place. That’s why I also focused on cutting and staggering to get the light and shadow effect, and incorporated my own unique memories in my model.

In my future studies I will pay more attention to the atmosphere of the space and the use of temperature, light, materials and sound, and to the effect of space on people’s senses.
